Feind's Fizz
Ricky GomezSong: I Got It (What you need?) by Galactic w/Lyrics Born
Song choice rationale:
Galactic is such an amazing party band and the lyrics of this track translate straight to bartending. We ask it all night. "What do you need?, What can I get you?" The answer is always "I GOT IT!" It's what we do. Make people happy and give them what they want and need. Different people ask with different urgency so the name "Feind's Fizz" seemed appropriate. With the band being from NOLA, I pulled cocktail inspiration from of course a fizz adding one of NOLA's favorite spices cayenne pepper, a little chartreuse to add complexity, and bitter lemon soda over normal soda to bring it to life and dry out the egg a bit.
Recipe:
2 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
0.5 oz Tanqueray
3/4 oz Lime Juice
3/4 oz cayenne honey
1/4 oz yellow chartreuse
One whole egg
1.5 oz Fevertree Bitter Lemon
Soda Place all ingredients in a shaker tin except soda. Shake vigorously. Place soda in bottom of collins glass and strain shaker tin contents over.
Cash Cup
Nathan GreeneSong: C.R.E.A.M. by Wu-Tang Clan
Song choice rationale:
Wu-Tang has strong ties to the Jamaican community; Appleton Estate is a Jamaican rum. "Cash Rules Everything Around Me" is a nod to the greenbacks. Lime wheels are green. Similar to a take on a Pimm's Cup, I stack the "green" up the glass. The egg white creates a foam, or, in other words, a "creamy" texture. Pernod is used, and absinthe is thought of as a luxury item that only the rich could indulge in. I made this drink off the cuff for a female regular, and her ringtone went off for her boyfriend as he called her; the ringtone was "C.R.E.A.M."!
Recipe:
2 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
.625 oz SNAP Liquer
.75 oz Fresh Lime
.75 oz Fee's Falernum Cordial Syrup
.75 oz Pasteurized Egg White
6 drops Bittercube Blackstrap Bitters
3 drops Pernod Absinthe
Fill Gossling's Ginger Beer
Fill a Collins Glass w/crushed ice while adding thin lime wheels in rows up the glass, then set aside. Combine all ingredients other than the bitters in a mixing tin and dry shake, then shake vigorously with ice. Take Collins and add roughly 1-2 oz of ginger beer. Strain ingredients from mixing tin into Collins. Swizzle, with barspoon or swizzle stick, up and down to combine the ingredients. Foam should hold from the egg whites. Drop bitters in the foam as garnish.
Flaming Passion
Victoria D'Amato-MoranSong: Hit Me With Your Best Shot from the album Crimes of Passion by Pat Benetar
Song choice rationale:
The real tough cookie, with a long history represents, what will be a pulverized ginger snap powdered rim with a Long History...Appleton Estates' long history in a LONG drink. I will present a sub par un-named rum in a shot glass while I make my drink, the "Shot" of the Appleton will be facing the "bum"shot rum.. The 2 shots will battle it out to see which one gets in the drink! The best shot! Appleton! When the chorus comes in the end..Hit me with your best shot..Fire Away!! I will light up the lemon that is filled with the 151! Throw on some cinnamon and sparks will fly!
Recipe:
2 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
0.5 Green Chartreuse
0.5 Lemon Sour ( 1:1:1 lemon.sugar.water)
2.5 oz Pineapple juice
1 sml.Barspoon Aztec Chocolate Bitters.
Garnish: Ginger Snap cookie rim spiked with nutmeg, a Half Lemon 151 or Everclear soaked, set a flame.
Pretty flower on the side.
Build ingredients into a mixing glass. Add ice. Shake, strain over fresh ice into the prepared 12 oz. Collins glass.
Jamaican Technique
Sean KenyonSong: Don't Sweat the Technique by Eric B and Rakim
Song choice rationale:
Lyrics: "I made my debut in 86', with a melody and a presidents mix. And i will stay on target: I started bartending in 1986. Bartenders sweat each other every day about technique (mostly behind their backs). I say don't sweat it, make a delicious drink. This one incorporates Jamaican allspice to complement Appleton's jamaican rum.
Recipe:
2 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
.75oz R&W Apricot
.25oz Allspice Dram
.5oz Fresh lemon juice
.25oz Agave nectar
Shake with ice. Strain over fresh ice into an old fashioned glass. Grate nutmeg over top.
Rum & Rye
Samuel TreadwaySong: American Pie by Don Mclean
Song choice rationale:
I've always loved this song. When I was a little kid I would dance and sing along but I never understood the lyrics. Now I'm older and have heard how it's really a sad story about the Mclean's perception of music's demise after Buddy Holly's death. But one thing has always bugged me. Why does he say "and they were drinking whiskey and rye"??? that's like saying "and they were wearing clothes and a shirt." So i decided to remedy this. I'm starting a campaign for the lyrics to be changed to "Rum and Rye." And the official drink of that campaign is this one! This drink combines the sweet smooth depth of Appleton Reserve with a hot spicy rye like Rittenhouse. Then some hints of bitter and a little blast of fruit with the apple and pomegranate. (America's favorite pie being apple of course!) It tastes like a complex version of a Jack Rose.
Recipe:
2 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
.5 oz Rittenhouse Rye
.5 oz Punt e Mes
.25 oz Aperol
.25 oz Grenadine (homemade with pomegranate)
3 slices Granny Smith Apple
2 dashes Peychaud Bitters
Lemon Twist
Muddle two slices of apple. Add liquids and shake with ice. Double strain into a chilled coupe glass. Twist of lemon over the drink and discard. Garnish with an apple slice.
