Congratulations to Natalie Jacobs, New York's Finalist! Congratulations to Natalie Jacobs, New York's Finalist!

Taking first place in New York's Appleton Estate Reserve Remixology, Natalie Jacobs was fully disguised as pop sensation, Lady Gaga, as she used her intuitive mixology skills and created the "Hello Mai Baby" inspired by Lady Gaga and Beyonce's hit song "Telephone." For her second cocktail inspired by New York-based film "Rear Window," Natalie created "The Miss Lonelyheart" cocktail while dressed in a black leotard, short white wig and oversized black sunglasses resembling Lady Gaga. Natalie will compete in the Appleton Estate Reserve Remixology Finals in New York on September 19.

Semi-Finalist Recipes

Hello Mai Baby

Natalie Jacob

Song: Telephone by Lady Gaga

Song choice rationale:
She says in the song "I'm out in the club and I'm sipping that bub and you're not gonna reach my telephone.." So i decided to do a champagne cocktail. i work at Lani Kai and Appleton is Jamaican rum so i wanted to keep a tropical/tiki-esque aspect to the recipe. A variation on the Mai Tai. The first lyrics to the song are "Hello, Hello Baby.." hence the title of the drink "Hello Mai Baby". Lady Gaga also rocks and I love this song!! Prepare for dancing!

Recipe:
1 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
1/4 macadamia orgeat
1/4 pineapple demerara syrup
1/2 kalani coconut liquor
3/4 lime top
champagne flute
garnish lime or edible flower possibly a tiny barbie telephone

Guerolito

Garret Richard

Song: Que' Onda Guero by Beck

Song choice rationale:
The Guerolito is an urban Tiki cocktail that evokes the colorful Latin neighborhood depicted in Beck's "Que Onda Guero." Beck grew up in a Mexican-Salvadorian area of Los Angeles and his song humorously recreates that experience while my accompanying drink emulates the flavors of the setting he has created. The coconut, cinnamon, and crushed ice remind the drinker of Latin staples such as flavored ices or Horchata. The main flavor components of mango, lime, and cayenne pay tribute to Mexican fruit vendors who Beck references in the lyric, “Mango ladies, vendedoras/And a bus stop singing/Banda macho chorus.” Beck’s lyrics also provided the direct inspiration for the cocktail’s presentation. The Virgin Mary candle glass was derived from the line, “Abuelitas with plastic bags/Walking to the church with the Spanish candles.” Beck and Appleton Reserve are a natural pairing. Beck mixes multiple genres and musical styles into his songs. Appleton Estate Reserve also relies on a careful blend.

Recipe:
2 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
3/4 oz lime juice
1/2 oz mango nectar
1/2 oz cinnamon bark syrup
1/2 oz cream of coconut
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper

Combine ingredients in a shaker tin and shake vigorously. Strain over crushed ice into a Virgin Mary Candle Glass or a tall Collins glass. Garnish with a mango slice and a cinnamon stick.

Jamaican Kung Fu Tea

Edwin Medina

Song: Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas

Song choice rationale:
Carl Douglas is from Jamaica and was strongly influenced by the largest community of any other ethnic group on that island. That being the Chinese. The Jamaican music, cuisine, art, and now hopefully their cocktails have been and still is a big part of the Jamaican history and lifestyle.

Recipe:
2 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
.75 fresh lemon juice
.25 organic light agave
1 oz persimmons nectar
1 oz coconut water infused with mandarin tea topped with sparkling wine

Raspberry Beret

Ivy Mix

Song: Raspberry Beret by Prince

Song choice rationale:
Well, first, Prince the shit. Secondly, I chose this song because I wanted to make a drink that someone would want just as much as prince wanted that girl in the beret. Take off her literal raspberry beret (the garnish) and enjoy! With the oleo-saccharum I am trying to make the drink brighter and "smarter" than the girl in the song. And just like Prince said, it is good the first time and I wouldn't change a stroke.

Recipe:
2 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
muddle 3 raspberry into
.5 oz lemon oleo-saccharum*
.5 oz cocchi americano
.75 oz fresh lemon juice
.25 oz egg white

Dry shake, add ice, re shake, fine strain into a coupe, garnish with a raspberry on a prism prick *oleo-saccharum.
Peel entire lemon with as little pith as possible, muddle peels, add 1/2 cup sugar and let sit at least 1 hour

Taste the genuine hospitality of the Jamaican people with every sip of this delicious Appleton Reserve based cocktail...We Be Jammin'!
